about

☆ I’m Lauren Gallagher, a Dublin-based film critic and editor writing on international cinema, genre literature, and contemporary screen culture.☆ I’m the founder and editor-in-chief of Abhartach Magazine, a limited-print literary and cultural magazine focused on the horror genre, where I oversee editorial development, commissioning, production, and distribution.☆ My criticism focuses on close textual analysis grounded in cultural context, with particular interests i authorship, gender, power, and contemporary independent and arthouse cinema. I regularly cover press and preview screenings in Ireland and the UK, including theatrical releases, festival titles, premieres and repertory programming. My writing has appeared in Film Ireland, BUST Magazine, Certified Forgotten, Wig-Wag Magazine, Monstrous Flesh Journal, CinemaWaves, Apocalypse Confidential, Morbidly Beautiful, and other global film and culture publications.☆ In addition to film criticism, I also write on contemporary literature and genre publishing, with a particular focus on feminist writing and experimental prose. I’ve reviewed forthcoming and newly released titles for major UK publishers including Faber, Granta, and Orion, as well as independent presses such as Peepal Tree Press, Dead Ink, Strangers Press, and Fly on the Wall Press.☆ Alongside my writing practice, I work professionally in collections and archives. I’m currently Special Collections Librarian at the International Centre for the Image (PhotoIreland) and Archives and Collections Team Lead for the Museum of Childhood Ireland, with experience in metadata design, cataloguing, and public-facing cultural projects. This archival background informs my approach to film criticism, particularly around preservation, canon formation, and film history.☆ I’m open to commissioned criticism, reviews, and editorial collaborations.
